Cracow (Krakow or Krakov)

Main market square - Rynek Glowny

Kraków, also Cracow or Krakow, lies in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in southern Poland. It was founded in the 7th century, and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list since 1978. Furthermore, it is the third biggest city in Poland, coming after Warsaw and Lodz. Krakow was the capital city of Poland until 1596.

Krakow remained undamaged at the end of the Second World War, and thus became the only Polish city not to be destroyed and to keep its historical shape.

The whole city of Krakow is surrounded with fortifications and a park. Very tall ramparts and a moat used to stay here in the past. They are only fully preserved in one part together with the St. Florian’s Gate, which measures 33,5 meters. At this gate begins the Royal Road, leading to the Wawel castle through Rynek Glowny.

If you wish to have a short holiday, then visiting Krakow is the right choice. 2 or 3 days will be enough for discovering the beauty of Krakow.

How to get to Krakow?

The train will take you to the Krakow Glowny station, not very far from the city centre. In case you are lazy or have heavy luggage, you can use the local tramways. They ply very often, are clean and reliable. The ticket costs 2,40 zloty for one person. For a one-day ticket you will pay 10 zloty and for a three-day ticket 24 zloty. The distances in Krakow are not long, so do not count on taking the tramway very often.
